I think everyone has a place. A place they can go and unwind, unplug, and get away from things. A place they visit every year. Either out on a solo trip or with family and friends.
South of Menomonie, Wisconsin rests a place called The Dunnville Wildlife Area. Locals refer to it as The Bottoms. It is this place that means so much to me. A place where it all began. I can remember the day. September 5th 2011, when I first walked this beach and fell in the love with the place.
I feel as if every artist has one of these places. For Ansel Adams it was Yosemite, Jim Brandenburg it was Touch The Sky Prairie. For me it is The Bottoms. A place where you can see for miles. The wide open spaces of the oak savanna mixed with the beaches that wrap around the river bends allows your mind to wander and decompress. The confluence of the Red Cedar River merging with the Chippewa River. I've spent so many sunsets watching the merging of these two rivers. Getting lost in the calmness of the currents, watching the boiling of the rivers flowing by.
With the sun setting I knew I wanted to get to the beach. This very place, this very subject is where it all began. Chasing sunsets at The Bottoms. When they're phenomenal it makes you fall in love with the place. It had been dry for several weeks allowing the river to drop and reveal the massive beach that rests along the shore. Wrapping around the river bend for half a mile this beach washes away the stress of life like the sand blowing in the wind. Smoothing the soul and shaping it.
Set up on the edge of where the beach stretches out into the Chippewa River I chose the composition of the receding river revealing the beach. Puddles and juts of sand dotting the shore line. After the sun had set the sky glowed with intense warmth. Its rays bursting over the horizon in columns of light stretching out into the heavens. The warm glow filling my soul, I could feel the love for this place swell inside me as I pressed the shutter. Capturing the warm glowing sand in the evening light reflected the glowing warmth this place gives me. I could spend every single day here.
Walking back along the beach in the moon light brought me back to my days in college. It brought me back to that ancient feeling of finding myself when I felt I had lost everything. Being here is something of a spiritual experience for me. It's always been there for me. A place to go, to get away from it all. A place to think about life and just enjoy the healing tranquility of nature. A place that I've found that gives me the feeling "You've Always Been There".
