Patiently I waited. With a mild winter the Midwest suffered from perpetual cloud cover. For four months I studied space weather alerts, moon phases, and cloud cover. With ever aurora storm that slammed into our magnetic field I was either on the wrong side of the globe, it was to cloudy, or by the time the location I was at got into rotation the storm had passed and the data had faded.
Finally after four months, a clear sky, new moon, and an aurora storm came together. I knew I had to get out and capture this storm. I headed to a location I hold as a closely guarded secret. A location in Northern Wisconsin with little light pollution. A place that is still almost entirely wild and free.
I pulled up to my location, grabbed my gear, and made my way to the lake. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness of the night I fell in love with what I was set before me. Tire tracks that led out onto the lake, and with recent warm temps the snow had melted creating clear patches of ice that stretched on for as far as the eye could see. I setup my gear and waited.
The aurora glowed as a green arc for about an hour and half, and then all of a sudden the green arc began to come to life. A clear sign of movement took over as the arc began to grow pillars of light with different shades of color. The pillars began to move from left to right and the entire horizon began to move with colorful light. The excitement rushed through me as I watched our magnetic field come to life.
Standing there in the quiet solitude of the night I thought about how precious this all really is. To have a magnetic field and an atmosphere that work together to prevent the harmful charged particles from destroying the only known existence of life in our universe. Starring at this shot I hope you too get a sense of awe for creation as I did when I pressed the shutter.
