Touch The Sky Prairie rests a few miles outside of Luverne, Minnesota. Setting out into the area for a work trip I knew I wanted to get out into the landscape and explore the beauty of the area. Finding the prairie on Google Maps I set out to see what beauty it held.
It is an incredibly beautiful place. A place that feels ancient, untouched by modern man even among the endless fields of farmland in western Minnesota. The prairie magically rises above the surrounding area, granting viewers a unique view of up to 20 miles surrounding the property. A place that really makes you feel like you could reach up and Touch The Sky.
Inspired by the surrounding beauty I waited for sunset. The clouds vanished in the sky above me. I knew I had to be creative. I opened up my mind and let the prairie guide me. I studied its unique beauty. Studying the rocks that jut up out from the ground among pools of water here and there. Watching the rocks reflect the warm rays of the fading sun a vision came to my mind.
I grabbed my gear approaching rock formation after rock formation. Changing composition trying to capture the soul of this place. Standing in the prairie I came to this set of rocks in the prairie. My 6th sense came to life. A rush came over me, a swelling love for this place. With goosebumps covering my skin I carefully adjusted my composition.
As the sun approached the horizon the rocks and the prairie grass began to glow with warmth. Everything came together for that perfect moment in time. I pressed the shutter as my heart raced. With my 6th sense on fire, I knew I captured the soul of this place. The unreal beauty, something you have to see for yourself.
After capturing my shot, I made my way back to my car. A truck pulled up, and as the window rolled down I began a conversation with the gentleman who helped make this land public for everyone to enjoy. To make sure it stayed protected. He has worked for National Geographic for 30 years capturing the stunning beauty of nature. His name is Jim Brandenburg, and he grew up close to the area.
The conversation hit home for me. Here I was conversing with someone that is doing exactly what I want to do with my life. Capturing the stunning beauty of nature full time, and securing the beauty we capture by making sure its around for future generations. There are so many places I have photographed that I have fallen in love with. Places I hope to also one day help protect through my work.
