Arriving in Granada I knew of a few places I wanted to photograph within the city. This church being one of them. The church dates back to the 16th century, and has had a few rebuilds due to damage. I knew I wanted to capture a sunset over the city from the bell tower.

After exploring the city I made my way to the church. I had my guide talk with the guard to allow us to get a sunset shot. Climbing the old spiral stairway really took me back in time. Reaching the platform of the bell tower you could see the entire city, Lake Nicaragua, the volcano Mombacho and several mountains in the distance.

I studied the city and found a composition looking west that called to me. While waiting for the sunset a man appeared from the stairwell with ear muffs and gloves. He signaled for me to cover my ears. Putting his ear muffs on he grabbed the ropes for the bell and began to ring the bells for the entire city to hear. Other churches in the distance began to answer back and it seemed as if the whole city came to life.

Right after bells came to silence the sun began to set and luckily a few clouds began to appear just in time. As the sun began to dip below the horizon the clouds began to glow. Casting a magical glow onto the city and the church of Iglesia de la Merced. The windows in the tower glowed, as if the sunset gave life to the church. A moment I will never forget.
