With an alert of that the Northern Lights were going to be good I set out for Champney Park along the south shore of Tainter Lake. A spot that had become one of my favorites for viewing the Aurora. The moon was set to rise later on in the night.

At first the Northern Lights were just a green arc through the sky. I photographed at this location and made my way to the north end of the lake where I walked out onto the ice photographing ice shacks with the Northern Lights above. It was cold, -20 with the windchill, and we just had a fresh powder. I had to work the next day and so I decided to head home.

Getting home by about midnight or 1 am, I climbed out my cold weather gear and into bed. I checked the data one more time, and noticed it had spiked higher than what it was when I was out.. I was frozen and exhausted but something told me I should go. I climbed out of bed grabbed my cold weather gear and made my way back to the lake.

It was unreal. This was the first frame I was able to capture after getting back to the lake. The quiet calm green arc had erupted into a wall of dancing pillars of light. The Auroras had come to life.. With the moon glowing overhead the entire scene turned to daylight. The stars shined through the Auroras like the fresh glinting snow on the ground.

What a rush, the colors intensified as the aurora waved back and forth rapidly. It was so incredible to see the brilliant color of them even through the bright moon light. I stayed out until 4 or 5 am. Took an hour nap and rushed off to work. Tired but extremely happy I pushed myself to get out and experience this and to be able to capture it with my camera.
