Spending several days in Granada, Nicaragua I searched the town for any opportunity to capture the stunning beauty of this colonial city nestled on Lake Nicaragua. Talking with locals, a travel agency, and several friends who had visited the town I was told of a legendary view from a legendary church nestled in the heart of the city.

With a vision in mind I had an idea with a hope that a sunset would bring my vision to life. I had one day, just one chance to nail this shot. Talking with the travel agency in town I was granted permission from the guards of the church to stay until sunset. I wanted to capture the sun setting in the distant hills.

Climbing the spiral stone staircase it took me back in time. Barely wide enough to get me and my camera gear up I emerged through the floor of the bell tower. I found the composition I had been searching for. I set my camera up and waited. A man climbed to the top of the tower put on a set of ear muffs and gloves and gestured for us to cover our ears. Bell towers throughout the city began to ring and chime. All of a sudden the man in the bell tower began to return the call in a symphony of ringing bells.

Fireworks began to ignite out of the crowds shooting up into the sky. Sometimes exploding only feet from our location. A festival began to commence as the entire city came to life. The bells began to silence as the fireworks took over until nightfall. The energy of the city began to build while the sun began to set.

Clouds pushed over Lake Nicaragua just as the sun began to set over the horizon. I knew I was going to be blessed with the shot I was looking for. The sun dipped below the horizon and cast a warm golden glow over the city. The rooftops began to glow in the golden light and the palm tree's glimmered in the warm fading rays. A moment I will never forget. A moment that brought to life the Legend of Las Mercedes Church.
