The year of 2014 was one for the record books. It was one of the coldest winters I have ever experienced in my life. Nearly 80 some percent of Lake Superior was completely frozen over. Giving special access to something that is almost only available to see by boat.
Talking an idea over with a friend we both agreed it would be incredible to head up to the ice caves in northern Wisconsin to capture them in a unique light. We had an idea to get out on the ice in the full moon light. We left around 7pm and reached our destination by 10pm. The temperature with the windchill was a bone chilling -35 degrees. It was a mile hike from the parking lot out on to the lake before we even got to the ice caves.
Hiking out onto the lake under the stars in the full moon was unreal. It really gave the lake a special feel. Something that will live with me forever. It is so dangerous being out on the ice, since conditions can change in a heartbeat, especially with a rouge wave rolling into the shoreline underneath the ice. Yet the opportunity to capture something so unique was worth the risk.
As we approached the caves we studied the cliffs seeking out unique ice patterns. Coming across this scene it stopped me dead in my tracks. An eerie feeling crept over me. Frozen in the wall it looked as if the ice had formed an eerie face full of suffering and sorrow. As if every sailor who had lost their life to the lake had been frozen in time.
Pressing the shutter I shook off the eerie feeling and kept on. We managed to go 2 more miles along the shore before we felt a huge wave roll in under the ice. Finally we decided we had been lucky enough and should turn around. Hiking 3 miles back we made it back to the car around 2 am, and didn't get back home until 5am. A trip that i will never forget.
