In the fall of 2013 a friend showed me Round Hill in Durand, Wisconsin. A place dedicated to honor Mary Queen of Family Life, it is a place that is sacred nestled among the bluffs of The Driftless. Right next to the Chippewa River stands a cross, about 7-8 feet tall. It gave me an idea for a photo.
I wanted to capture it in way that brought the story of Christ, to life. From the beginning to the end. It was January 21st 2014. The forecast called for a clear sky and I knew I was going to have the opportunity to bring my shot to life. I waited for the right moon phase and for the moon to be at the right angle for my shot. At 2 am I set out for Round Hill in Durand. The temperature was -35 with the windchill. Wisconsin was experiencing one of the harshest winters on record.
I parked my car and grabbed my gear. There was a fresh powder of snow that blanketed the field surrounding the cross. It had been so cold the Chippewa River had frozen over completely from shore to shore for as far as the eye could see. The moon was not yet in position. I set up and waited for 45 minutes.
Standing there in the peaceful solitude of the winter night I listened and watched. It was so cold you could hear the tree's popping from the sap freezing inside them, and ice chunks flowing underneath the sheet of ice over the river. I gazed at the cross in front of me. The moon shined bright in the sky, illuminating the entire scene. The fresh snow flakes reflected the light from the moon, making them glint like the stars in the heavens above.
As the moon approached the specific location in the sky that I was looking for I pressed the shutter. Setting a small aperture I was able to create a sun burst with my lens. Turning the moon into the Star of Bethlehem. With the moon glowing like a star over the cross it captured the beginning and the end of the story of Christ. With the snow glinting like stars, it reminded me of all the miracles he performed while here on Earth.
I stood there in the cold watching the cross. I thought about the sacrifice he made, and the gift that was given. A gift of unconditional love. The Gift of Eternity.
