When I first heard about Pictured Rocks National Park I knew this was something I had to see and capture. I traveled to the area and stayed 11 days. I explored the cilffs overlooking Lake Superior and majestic waterfalls that that cascade through the northern forests of Upper Michigan.
There was a section of the cliffs I knew I wanted to see from shore. I looked at the map and found Chapel Rock was the closest point to where I wanted to start. I traveled to Chapel Road and made my way to the parking lot. Chapel road is absolutely stunning, and at times can be rough.
I parked my car and started the trek to Chapel Beach. Along the way you pass Chapel Falls. It is about a 3-4 mile hike to this vantage point. It was in the middle of July, and the stable flies were overwhelming. I have heard if you go in August or later in the year they disappear.
Emerging from the forest I was greeted with this view. The amount of excitement and the thrill of exploring rushed through me. Starring out at the 200 foot cliffs towering over Lake Superior I couldn't believe my eyes. I knew they said they were tall, but wow they really take your breath away, and the water reminded me of Greece or the Caribbean.
I studied this tree in front of me on a feature they call Chapel Rock. There use to be land connecting the main part of the cliffs to the tower. With the rock worn away the only thing connecting these two features were the roots of this pine tree. Amazing how life can sustain itself even in situations where it would otherwise be impossible.
Starring at these roots that led to this pine tree I felt a connection to this place. The white sandy beach reminded me of Little Corn Island in Nicaragua. Palm trees were replaced by spruce, aspen, pine, birch, and maple. I felt like I was transported out of the mid west. If you have never been to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, it is a must see. The landscapes in Upper Michigan are so epic.
