Arriving in Brandon, South Dakota on a trip for work I knew I wanted to get out and experience the dark skies the great northern plains had to offer. I researched locations and took off south of Sioux Falls.

Finding a tree in the middle of nowhere literally felt like finding the only tree in South Dakota. I made plans to come back at just the right moment in the middle of the night. Heading south of out Sioux Falls I couldn't believe how dark it was here. I hadn't seen dark skies like this since Nicaragua.

Lights from farmsteads could be seen on the plains for as far as the eye could see. Scattered among the plains, glowing like stars in the fields. Arriving at this tree I got out and walked into the farm field to set up. It was incredibly dark. Even my eyes had a hard time adjusting.

The stars shone brightly, and there were so many of them. I let the dark solitude consume me as I began my exposure. Setting up for a photo of the Milky Way arching over the tree.

Standing there in complete darkness I thought about how long it took for the light to reach my eyes from the center of our galaxy. What had transpired here on Earth since that light left its star. Our time here is so short, and this is all so incredibly precious. If you've never taken time to simply sit outside in the middle of the night and watch the stars and think about life you're really missing out.

Sioux Falls is located just to the left of the tree on the far left of the image and Sioux City can be seen glowing on the far right. To give a sense of perspective the tree in front of me is roughly 30 feet tall. The Milky Way from the core on the right to the outer rim on the left is about 50,000 light years. The core where the bright warm light comes from, rests 25,000 light years away. It takes 25,000 years for that light to reach Earth, and for 25 seconds my camera captured that light for an eternity. Creation is so epic, and the massive scale is so incredibly humbling to think about.
