On a trip to Duluth, MN I knew I wanted to capture the frozen landscapes along the shores of Lake Superior. In the middle of one of the coldest winters on record I set out for a sunrise shot at Split Rock Lighthouse. One of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. I had an idea for a photo of the sea steam illuminated by the rising sun.
It was 4 am, January 28th 2014. The temperature in Duluth, MN was -44 degrees and the windchill was dipping to -70 degrees. I knew the steam rising off the lake was going to be epic. When mother nature goes to its extremes it always presents beauty in a unique way.
Arriving at Split Rock Light house I prepped my gear inside the car. I knew the moment I opened the door I wasn't going to be able to adjust my tripod. The grease would freeze and prevent me from making any adjustments. I headed to the location I had scouted the day before in the early morning light. It was still a half an hour before the sun would actually begin to rise over the horizon. Set up I waited listening to the gentle waves of the lake wash up along the frozen shore leading to the light house.
The steam rolling off the lake climbed nearly to the top of the 130 foot cliff where the lighthouse rests. With the lighthouse standing 54 feet tall on top of the cliff it was so epic to see the size comparison of the steam rolling off the lake. The cold was mind numbing, as it stole your breath away and froze my eyes, I waited.
The sun began to rise over the horizon and slowly the entire scene around me began to glow with a pinkish purple hue. The top of the steam began to glow orange and red. With emotions rushing my 6th sense came to life as I pressed the shutter and began my exposure for this panorama.
To this day I have no idea how I sat along the shore for 3 hours in -70 degree weather. I was so dedicated, with a vision in mind and my 6th sense on fire I knew I was in store for something epic. I just had to push myself. Sometimes you just have to redefine your boundaries and limits. Looking at this shot I hope you get that magical sense of what it is like to be out in the brutal cold along the shores of Lake Superior. Witnessing the steam roll and churn with the waves, dancing in the warm rays of the rising sun, like fire. Lake Superior is a mysterious and majestic lake, full of beauty.
