On a trip that took me over 2,000 miles from home, 4 plane rides, and a half hour boat ride over the Caribbean I finally had arrived to Little Corn Island in Nicaragua. With no reservations I was lucky enough to find a place to stay on the east side of the island at Carlitos.

It was nearly a full moon and by the time I found a cabana to stay in it was dark. I stayed up until 11 walking along the shore photographing the moonlit island. With an idea in mind I decided to wake back up at 2:30 am just as the moon was setting.

My alarm went off and I grabbed my gear and made my way to the beach. Looking south east over the island the Milky Way shone brightly in the sky, and the planet Venus was just rising over the horizon. The planet created a pillar of light leading to me, something I had only ever seen the moon create.

This was the first Milky Way photo I had ever attempted. With the light shinning from Graces Cool Spot Hotel the Milky Way rose up out of the palm tree's and arched out over the Caribbean. I was in complete awe by what was showing up on the back of my camera. Having just traveled over 2,000 miles, the first time I had ever been in a plane, my perception of the world got a lot bigger. Yet as I glanced at the back of my camera and starred off into the distant sky my perception of the universe became that much greater.

I watched what I could of the 400 some billion stars that make up our galaxy, burning bright in the core. So many different stars, each with planets of their own. The thought of billions of these galaxies existing in the universe was a very humbling feeling. I sat there in awe about the possibilities. What other worlds are out there. What do their landscapes look like, and do any of them hold any form of life. Looking at this shot I hope you too get that same sense of awe.
