Watching the development of sunspot region 2371 I was alerted of two M class flares fired directly at Earth. Excitement rushed through me as I knew the sky was going to be clear. I studied weather models paying close attention to cloud movement. I checked the moon phase to see how full it was going to be and how soon it was going to set. Lastly I paid attention to the solar wind dials and studied the WSA-Enlil Solar Wind Prediction to see when it was predicted that these two monster impulsive solar flares would collide with our magnetic field.

At 3 pm CST the first M 2.0 flare collided with our magnetic field sending the solar wind dials soaring! Excitement rushed as I watched the data climb. Numbers I had only hoped to ever see in my life time. As the evening approached the wind dials died down and the Auroras went quiet. My heart sunk and as hope stirred deep inside me that the second M class flare would hit soon as the sun was setting.

I grabbed my gear and headed north out of Eau Claire, WI. Half way north the wind dials began to pick back up. I couldn't believe my luck, I knew I was in for the best Northern Lights show I had ever seen in my life. It was 10 pm when I arrived on location. The wind was howling at 20 mph over the lake. I waited and watched as the data kept climbing. The ovation map filled and became a giant band of red with the Hemispheric Power rushing to 123 GW! The second M2.7 class flare began to collide with our magnetic field, igniting a powerful display of the Auroras. An hour and a half after the sun had set, the few remaining clouds began to push over and the skies began to clear as the wind died down. All of a sudden I noticed this brilliant green glow low over the horizon.

As the clouds cleared and the sky became completely dark I noticed the Northern Lights directly above me. My heart raced, goosebumps rushed over me as I was in complete shock. Feeling like a deer in the headlights I froze as I starred up into the Auroras above. Watching them dance, flare, arc, and flash above me. Changing shape and color. I felt as if the Auroras were going to lift me off the ground into the heavens. At this very moment I felt a deep connection with mother nature and the universe.

Marveling at the beauty unfolding above me I was completely humbled. To see the aurora like this I thought I was going to have to travel to Alaska, Iceland, or northern Canada. Never in my dreams did I think that I would be able to see the auroras like this in Wisconsin. A moment that has left a significant impact on my life. I live for moments like these. Looking at this shot I hope you get the same captivated, awe inspiring, humbled feeling that I had when the I pressed the shutter.
