I don't know how I find locations like this. Sometimes I feel as if I'm guided, heeding the call and trusting nature. After working all day I came home and pulled up Google Maps. It was a new moon and the skies were going to stay perfectly clear. I knew I wanted to get out and capture the Milky Way. I just wasn't sure where to go.

Scouring the map I came across an old church just south of Eleva, Wisconsin. In the middle of this coulee in The Driftless rests this old beautiful church called the Bruce Valley Church. Having explored the area before I knew there were several other locations of interest near this church. I grabbed my gear and made my way south out of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Arriving early I discovered that there was no yard light that would ruin the shot. I couldn't believe my luck. I studied the movement of the Milky Way and determined my shot wouldn't present itself for a couple of hours. I headed out to another location while allowing time to pass so I could be in the right place at the right time.

Several hours later I came back to the Bruce Valley Church. The Milky Way almost in position. I framed up my shot with the front of the church on the left accompanied by an old oak tree on the right. Off in the distance behind the church were rolling farm land, something to tie in the heart of Wisconsin.

As I stood there in the dark I waited for the Milky Way to align just between the steeple and the tree. The Milky Way moved and rested in position, hovering in the heavens above the church. I pressed the shutter, capturing the light from billions of stars. Light that took over 25,000 years to reach my eyes and the sensor of my camera.

Getting into an artistic flow it is as if I became part of the moment. The energy building inside, the rush of excitement creating a bond with creation. This is what I live for. Just those few seconds of bliss when everything comes together.
