I decided to take a last minute adventure to the Apostle Island Lake Shore State Natural Area. With almost a full moon approaching I had a vision of the sea caves lit up in the glory of the moonlight. I had also received an alert that the northern lights were active. With a clear sky and the potential for something once in a lifetime I knew I couldn't pass this up, everything else had to wait. Me and my good friend and fellow photographer Brian Fuhrman pulled onto Meyers Beach road where we found that we would have the entire shore to ourselves. Windchills were pushing -35 degrees. It is a mile hike before you get to the beginning of the caves. We hiked along the caves in search of a great shot. We found some interesting things but kept on in search of that one composition that just stood out from all the rest.
Roughly 3 miles into the trip we came to this location. I set up for my shot and began a panorama. Exhaustion was the bigger battle than fighting the cold at this point. Struggling to stay awake I knew I had to get this shot. Just as I finished this panorama I decided to set up for another when all of a sudden a wave rolled in under the ice. With the ice cracking and moving we both decided to not push our luck, and headed back to the car. After 6 miles of hiking in -35 degrees, 7 hours in the car, and battling extreme exhaustion all I could think about was sleep and the hope that I had captured what I had in mind. Looking at it all put together makes it all worth while. I live for getting into moments like these. Looking at this shot I hope you get that sense of excitement to see what lies around the next bend.
