Winter in Wisconsin can be brutal at times. The cold can drop well below zero and the snow can reach several feet deep and last for 4-5 months. The year of 2014 was the coldest year I have ever experienced in my lifetime, but there was something so incredibly beautiful about it. When mother nature goes to her extremes that's when I get this calling from within. To get out, embrace it and capture it for everyone to see. That is when she expresses her incredible beauty in the most unique way.

On a night in January in 2014 I received an alert that the Northern Lights were going to be active. Checking the weather and the cloud cover, I noticed that the skies were clear thanks to the brutal cold, and that the moon wouldn't be out until well after midnight. These were prime conditions, even with the temperature dropping to -35 degrees with the windchill..

Making my way to Champney Park on the south east side of Tainter Lake just north of Menomonie, WI I noticed the lights out over the northern horizon. Stepping out of the car the cold crisp air stole my breath away. I grabbed my gear and adjusted to the cold. Breathing the fresh cold clean air I set up my camera and waited.

The lights began as a green arc over the northern horizon. Waiting for over an hour something began to happen. The green arc began to grow thicker and push south towards me. Here and there along the arc there were hints of pillars beginning to form. in an instant the green arc erupted into dancing, pulsing pillars of light. Ranging from aqua, green, and purple. With the lake covered in snow, the snowflakes glinted like the stars in the night sky.

An incredible sense of awe took over me in the cold. At this very moment when all my senses were rushing I pressed the shutter. Capturing the beauty of a Wisconsin Winter Night.
