When the thought of going to Colorado and getting a chance to do some photography came across my path, one of the locations that was at the top of my list was the Crystal Mill. It is thee most photographed landmark in the state of Colorado. So many famous landscape photographers have set their cameras up to capture the beauty of this historical setting.

Built in 1892 the mill was constructed to provide air to a compressor for the silver mining. There is so much rich history right here in Crystal, Colorado. You can just feel it in every step that you take.

It was a 4 mile hike in from Lizard Lake just 2 miles east of Marble, Colorado. On a road named Route 3. It is a route that has been known to be fatal. Reading about the hazards I decided to park and hike in. It was going to be an 8 mile round trip. Hiking along the way I found two really narrow spots next to some pretty intense cliff sides. Near one of these narrow locations was an old pick up, crushed, resting next to the river in the canyon. A reminder of just how dangerous and unforgiving the mountains can be.

Hiking through the canyon the sound of the river rushing past filled the cool air around me. After about 2 hours I finally made my way to the mill. The lighting was intense and directly overhead. I decided to wait for 4 hours until the lighting began to cooperate with the composition I had in mind.

As I waited I watched and studied the river. The clear turquoise water rushing over the cliff into the pool set a tranquil mood to the scene. I studied the pool as I watched the trout begin to feed on a hatch. The wind rustled through the aspen leaves. The rushing quaking of the leaves created a melody with the calmness of the currents rushing past. It was this moment when I pressed the shutter. Capturing what miners enjoyed over 100 years ago.
