Hearing about a story of a man who planted over 4 miles of sunflowers to remember and honor his wife, who had lost her life to cancer, moved me. My whole pursuit of photography began from a broken heart. With a heart swollen and a feeling of passionate nostalgia I had an idea. To capture these sunflowers in a way nobody had ever seen them before.

Heading west out of Eau Claire, Wisconsin I made my way to one of the fields I had scouted out the day before. With clear skies I knew I was going to be able to bring my vision to life. To capture billions of stars burning brightly in the night sky, hovering in the heavens above the field of sunflowers. As I got to the location I parked my car and made my way into the field.

I turned off my flashlight, letting the darkness and the solitude of the night consume me. Getting into that 6th sense mode I wandered the field searching out a composition with the galactic heart of our Milky Way Galaxy. I stopped and starred out at the heart of our galaxy. Billions of stars burning brightly in the night sky. I couldn't help but think about all the possibilities. Every star harboring planets, and then to think about billions of galaxies in our own universe. Humbled with this thought I found my composition.

With several sunflowers leading out towards others, the Milky Way shot up out of the one in front of me. I knew this is what I had come to capture. With every sense and cell in my body firing I pressed the shutter. With emotions stirring I couldn't believe what I was looking at on the back of my camera. To capture light that took 25,000 years to reach Earth was so amazing. Light the very thing that sustains this field and gives the name to the flower in front of me.

Looking at this shot I hope you get a sense of awe for creation. Just think about what you're looking at, all the possibilities, the scale of the universe and all of creation, and how precious this all really is.
